| Biography Dr Beaney did his undergraduate training in Scotland at the University of Glasgow qualifying in 1974. After junior house jobs at home and abroad he underwent his oncology training at the Hammersmith Hospital in London. This included work on using heavy particle – fast neutron-treatment of cancer. His research work, dealing with the role of positron emission tomography in oncology, was carried out in the MRC Cyclotron unit at the Hammersmith Hospital. After obtaining his MD he worked as senior lecturer in the immunology department at the University of Birmingham studying the effects of ionising radiation on DNA. He then moved back to London in 1990 as consultant clinical oncologist at St Thomas’ Hospital. He is currently Consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Kings College Hospital. He is an Honorary Consultant at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. His major interests are in tumours of the brain and pelvis (prostate and gynaecological cancers.) He has produced more than 100 publications on a range of oncology topics. His current research deals with the use of novel agents in the treatment of brain and pelvic cancers. He has been Head of Section at Guy's and St Thomas' and Chair of the Tumour Working Group for Gynaecology. He has been on countless local, regional and national committees dealing with a variety of topics including rare tumours, brain tumours, service provision and the availability of oncology beds in the UK. He recently served on the Faculty Board of The Royal College of Radiologists and was past President of the Royal Society of Medicine – Radiology Section. He is currently a Council Member and treasurer of the British Neuro-oncology Society and a member of several European and American Societies. He is an Examiner for The Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR Part 11). He is Director of Oncology at one of London’s private hospitals. |
